BLOEMFONTEIN / MANGAUNG
Bloemfontein means "a fountain of flowers".
It is the judicial capital as well as the capital of the Free State province of S.Africa. Mangaung is yet another name for the city which stands for "a place of cheetahs". As the name says, the place is abundant in flowers, specially roses, and hence, also
called as the "city of roses". The highest court is Appeal court, which was completed in 1929. The cultural heritage is reflected by many museums and monuments like Anglo Boer War Museum, National Museum, Boyden Observatory, Choet Visser Rugby
Museum, Fire Station Museum, Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Queens Fort Military Museum(exhibits boer wars and apertheid struggle), Presidency Museum(former residence of presidents of the Orange Free Stare Republic), Women's Memorial, National Botanical Garden, SA Armour Museum(exhibits military armour). President Brand Street is a place for walk which is tree surrounded . There is also the "Golden Gate National Park", which has cliffs and are damn beautiful.
History:
the Bloemfontein was founded officially in 1846 by British army major Henry Douglas Warden. Earlier than this , the place was inhabited by people like Cape Colony, Griqua, Basotho, Trek Boers. The name literally means "fountain of flowers" , the origin of the name is not clear and is associated with different stories. One is with an ox named "Bloem" and other story with a person named Jan Bloem. Bloeamfontein holds an important status and is the sixth largest city of S.Africa.
Football:
Football first came here in 1891, when the city was called as "Oranje Vrij Staat" . The famous clubs like Dundee United, NewCastle United, Aberdeen, Ajax Amsterdam and Eintracht Frankfurt have already played here. Blomfontein City was the first professional club of the city.
Blomfontein Celtic is the soccer club that plays in Premier Soccer League. It was founded in 1969 as Mangaung United Football Club. It is the best known and the wealthiest in the country, and has the most enthusiastic and large fan base .
